12 – Floor Selection

As it turns out, choosing the floor turned out to be one of the more difficult choices to make. Initially I wanted to put down wide pine planks as there’s a ton of local sources but couldn’t come up with a way to fasten them to the subfloor that didn’t include either building up the subfloor or using nails.  Nailing into the subfloor would cause much too much transmission as well as concerns about the floor cupping over time.  And building up the subfloor brought concerns regarding overall ceiling height.

So the next type of flooring to consider was Engineered Hardwood.  I was skeptical of what I thought would be faux wood after years and years of renting apartments in NYC with cheap looking flooring. But that’s not true.  There’s a lot out there that looks pretty good.

But this is what we came up with.
